With the goal to minimise the environmental footprints of the operations of Hong Kong
International Airport (HKIA), the Airport Authority (AA) and business partners pledged in 2010
to reduce the airport-wide carbon emissions by 25% per workload unit by 2015 compared to 2008
emission levels. As of end 2013, the airport-wide carbon intensity was reduced by approximately
18% compared to the baseline.
In addition, the AA has implemented/will implement the following carbon reduction
measures:
Lighting System
-
Replaced traditional lighting in the terminals with 100,000 light-emitting diode (LED)
lights (Saving 15M kWh of electricity per year)
-
To replace 300 Airfield Ground Lighting with LED lights
Cooling System
-
Integrated the cooling systems in Terminal 1 and Ground Transportation Centre, Terminal 2,
HKIA Tower and Airport World Trade Centre to utilise seawater chilling units of various
sizes more efficiently. (Saving 5M kWh of electricity per year)
- Performed computer optimisation for fan and pump systems to improve energy efficiency at
Terminal 1
- Installed variable frequency drives for North Satellite Concourse and SkyPier chilled water
pumps
Aircraft Emissions
-
Imposed policy to restrict the use of auxiliary power units (APUs) for aircraft at parking
stands in December 2014
- Upgraded 96 pre-conditioned air (PCA) units and 136 fixed ground power (FGP) units to facilitate
APU restriction policy
Vehicle / Mobile Equipment Emissions
- Required all saloon vehicles on the airside to be electric vehicles (EVs) by 2017
- Continue to support the electrification of vehicles / mobile equipment of HKIA. Currently, HKIA
possesses 383 EVs and electric ground service equipment (EGSE)
- Installed 158 EV chargers and 56 EGSE chargers on the apron to facilitate the operation of EV
and EGSE
- Required all AA diesel vehicles to use biodiesel (B5)
Renewable Energy
- 1,200m2 photovoltaic panels will be installed in the Midfield Concourse, generating about
230,000 kWh of electricity
Carbon Audit System
- To facilitate effective management of carbon emissions, the AA developed an electronic Carbon
Audit System which provides an advanced carbon monitoring and reporting platform for the AA and
its 46 business partners
- The AA also carries out carbon audits for business partners on a yearly basis to review their
carbon emission data
The AA has received the following recognitions for its carbon reduction and energy saving efforts:
- Airports Council International - Airport Carbon Accreditation ‘Optimisation” Level since 2012
- HKAEE Energywi$e Label - Class of Excellence since 2008
- HKAEE Carbon“Less” Certificate since 2009
- CLP 2014 GreenPlus Recognition Awards - Energy Saving Award of Excellence
