- Has had a formal environment policy in place since 1998. This strategy involves our businesses
and support functions and aligns with our business goals. Action plans were built around the
strategy’s three pillars:
- Operational impacts
- Sustainable finance
- Stakeholder engagement
- As a bank, our operations have less impact on the environment than many businesses, but we can
make a difference by improving in three key areas:
- Energy consumption in our buildings
- Emissions from air travel
- Use of paper, which not only depletes forests but its production is energy and
water-intensive
- To help deliver the targets and monitor the overall impacts on the environment, we have
undertaken a comprehensive review and update of our Global Environmental Management System
(GEMS), modelled broadly on ISO 14001, the international environment management standard. GEMS
aims to deliver:
- Consistent environmental policy commitments and international environmental standards
- A framework for setting and reviewing environmental targets consistent with
environmental, cultural, political and regulatory circumstances or requirements
- Accurate and consistent data on our environmental performance, enabling us to set
targets and track progress
- Our biggest opportunity to help turn the tide of environmental damage is beyond our own
operations. Our wide engagement inside and outside the Bank achieves change by influencing the
behaviour of employees, customers and others
- Recognition of performance includes:
- Inclusion in the 2007 and 2008 Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index, a prestigious roll of
honour for global corporations addressing the challenges of climate change
- Honoured as Best in Class in our approach to climate change disclosure in a report
released on 22 September 2008 by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), a coalition of
more than 315 global investors with over USD41 trillion in assets. Now in its sixth
year, the CDP report is a survey of the responses of Financial Times 500 corporations to
the issue of climate change
- Inclusion in the FTSE4Good Environmental Leaders Europe 40 Index. The index includes
European stocks included in the FTSE4Good Series that received the top environmental
score of 5
- Standard Chartered Hong Kong was honoured with 2008 Hong Kong Awards for Environmental
Excellence – Financial Institutions Sector Silver Award
